We target 3 main Salmon species on our trips. On the Kasilof River we fish for King Salmon and Silver Salmon. On the Kenai River we go after Red Salmon, Silver Salmon and those monster Alaskan King Salmon the Kenai is so famous for. There are different techniques involved for catching each type of salmon in each of the rivers and our Salmon fishing guides will teach you the best method for the fish and the location.

Our friendly and capable fishing guides have worked for years, honing their salmon fishing skills along the shores of Alaska’s rivers. Let us share some of our favorite places in Alaska with you when you book your Alaska Salmon fishing trip with Drift Away fishing guides.

Nicks Best Salmon Fishing Story:

"Towards the end of july the fishing gets pretty hot.  We already had a great day, releasing some smaller fish (kings) and silvers and missing quite a few more.

As usual I was following the outgoing tide and slowly making our way to the takeout, I had two Kings in the fish box and needed one more. Spirits were high as I positioned the boat in the last hole.  Time was starting to get the best of us, but we were in a spot that had been producing great results for me. Within minutes the rod cranked over in the typical violent King take down, unfortunately the fish didn't stay hooked. I rebaited and we set the rod back out.

One of the best tips for catching Kings is to remain positive ALL day long, because it may take all day.  Sitting in my boat were three very positive and enthusiastic individuals, which makes any guides day easy.  The hour glass was on its last grain of sand;  I said lets sit for 10 more minutes, none argued with my idea.  Ten minutes went by, and the clients had to get back to the lodge i persuaded them to keep the line in the water so I could work the remaining 50 yards to the takeout.  I began pulling up the anchor as the boat caught the current and slowly began creeping down river  the rod buckled, but this time the fish was hooked good my client fought the fish like a champion and we netted it right at the takeout! Patience and a positive attitude put a beautiful 30+ lb Chrome bright Kasilof King in the fish box."

Jeremy's Best Salmon Fishing Story:

The Tidal Influence

Over the past few years we as a company have been fishing the tides on the Kasilof more and more. As the tide is coming in and going out King and Silver Salmon on the Kasilof river swim upriver to reach their spawning grounds. Due to its high success rate, we fish the tides religiously at some point during the day. One day in particular last season there was a guy by the name of Herbert fishing in my boat. We were there no longer than 5 minutes talking about why we were fishing in my favorite hole at this particular time. Telling him of the 64 lb. monster we had caught just two days prior.... I then saw Herbert's rod tip start to twitch a little.

He was turned towards me and then with no delay his rod slammed into the side of the boat. Herbert grabbed the rod with no delay and started fighting the king of his life! It surfaced only as it was stripping all the line off the reel, its back half sticking out of the water. Within seconds, this Giant King Salmon was more than 100 yards around the corner. In desperation, Herbert gave one more attempt to turn this magnum around and then as fast as the rod slammed into the boat the line went slack. The boat was in dismay , but only for one second.

The King that took Herbert's rod down was by far the most aggressive King I had ever seen on the Kasilof River. There was absolutely nothing we could do to stop this magnificent species of salmon. This is very special to me when something like this happens. You try so hard to give your self the best opportunity possible to land these giants and then they blow up your best gear in seconds. This is why we all love to fish the kasilof river, fighting giant King Salmon out of our drift boats! Herbert is already talking about coming back for another round.

Favorite Salmon for Eating:
The King Salmon

Favorite Salmon Recipe:
This recipe is for all salmon species.

Ingredients needed:  Salmon fillet, tomato, feta cheese, garlic, salt and pepper to taste.

Preheat oven to to 325 and prepare salmon as follows:  Cut skin off of fillet and place on a baking sheet.  Dice up 2 garlic cloves and spread onto fillet evenly.  Slice tomato thin as much as desired and place on top of fillet and garlic.  Next, you want to spread feta cheese over tomatoes evenly.  Again this amount is based on what you desire.  A moderate amount is recommended for best taste.  Finally, apply salt and pepper if desired.  Put into preheated oven and cook for 7 minutes per inch of thickness of fillet.  Take out and let sit for 3-5 minutes to reach proper temperature.  Do not overcook salmon as it tends to get dried out if cooked to long
