Since our last update we have been fishing the Kenai and Kasilof River for King Salmon.  The Kasilof has been producing more action as the month nears its end.  Get ready for June as we are hoping for a very productive 1st run!  The last guided fishing trip on the Kasilof fared well.  We landed 2 kings and lost one.  Steelhead, dolly varden, & several bites we missed provided more action for the day.  Video of this trip coming soon.....  Here is a photo of a Kenai King caught today on one of our charters.

Here are a few pictures from our Kenai River king salmon guided fishing trip that went out today.  Ray hooked into his first king 5 minutes into the trip and lost it as it bolted upriver toward the boat.  After a few hours of no action this beautiful 44 x 25.5 Kenai King Salmon buried the rod and the fight was on!

Ray's king salmon was 2 inches shy from the slot limit that is in effect this time of the year.  If a Kenai King is 46-55 inches it must be released.  Since Ray's was 44 inches long he decided to put his fish in the box.  Here is another shot of the salmon roe that we pulled out while cleaning this female king.

King salmon fishing on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska is starting to produce more opportunity at hauling in nice fish on the Kenai and Kasilof River.  June and July will only get better as the salmon runs enter the rivers for their annual spawn.  Nice job Ray!

The picture above is a Kasilof River 1st run 20lb chromer caught on a k-15 back in 2006.  Plugs are a great way to catch king salmon in the early part of the season.  The take downs are quick and hard while the fight is usually awesome with lower water conditions.  Kasilof River 1st run peak will occur from June 1-20th.  Come on and get in the boat!!  10% off from May 16-June 30!!

June and July is the best time of year to fish for Alaska King Salmon.  The first run in june on the Kasilof River peaks from June 1st-June 20th.  Limit is 2 per person per day.  Call for more on details of bag limit.

The Kasilof river 2nd run (bigger kings) peak stretches from July 10th- 31st.  Limit is any one king salmon per person per day and you have a good chance of hooking into king salmon over 40lbs daily.  Here are some highlights:

There has been high water in the middle kenai river the past few days. We finally saw the flood water that has been expected coming from The Harding Ice Field.  Trout on the Kenai have been responding by gathering up in good numbers in select holes throughout the river.  Below is a real nice Kenai River rainbow trout caught on one of today's fly fishing trips.

Research and development the past few days for Kenai rainbow trout fishing was good.  Nick, Nigel, Jeremy and some friends hit up various spots throughout the Kenai and here are a few fish we came up with:

OCTOBER 2008     Kenai River Trophy Rainbow Trout Fishing

What a day on the river as Kelby, Greg M. and Greg B. went out for a day of Kenai River Trophy Rainbow Trout Fishing on the Middle Kenai River.  With high water conditions for more than a week, the trout fishing was spotty. After landing a 25-inch rainbow, the fish spit up some eggs, allowing me to match the hatch.  We had multiple hook ups over the next few passes, but nothing Kenai trophy-size.  On our last pass in Second Hole, Kelby snagged the big tree at the bottom of the hole and we had to motor back up to get it out.  Once his line was free, Kelby cast back into the same spot, thinking that he had snagged again.  Pulling on the line, he soon realized that the trout was moving.  Even still, I was doubtful that it was anything significant, a pink salmon at best, based on how it was acting.

Coming into the top of Cracker Box, Kelby brought the fish to the surface and the four of us realized that we had a monster bow on.  At that point, everyone took to their positions, focusing on getting this fish in the net.  The fish took several long runs up river, coming to the surface a few times and thrashing about. Over the next few minutes, Kelby worked many different angles with his 10-foot 7-weight fly rod to tire out this monster.  It eventually made its way next to the boat, but due to the length of the leader and size of the fish, I had to grab the leader and carefully pull the fish in as Greg M. slid the net under.  However, this rainbow trout wasn't ready to be netted, taking another long, blistering run up river. Fortunately, Kelby regained control and got the fish back alongside the boat again.  I grabbed the leader once again, while Greg M. slid the net under the fish, successfully this time.  After letting it rest for a minute, we took quick measurements and photos, reveling in the size of this 33"x20" monster before watching it swim away back in to the Kenai.  Nothing but smiles and talk of this trophy trout rounded out what ended up being a great day of fishing on the Kenai.

MID SEPT. 2008      Middle Kenai River Trophy Rainbow Trout Fishing

30" Length x 20" Girth

This beautiful Rainbow Trout (30”x20”) was the first of three huge Kenai River Trophy Rainbow Trout landed during a classic fall day on the Kenai River.  A few drifts later produced rainbows of 30”x18” and a 27”x17”.   A day like this is epic by anyone’s standard, but to pull three Rainbow Trout of the above mentioned size out of one hole is extraordinary.  The Kenai River reached almost flood stages during much of September.  Causing the food source and trout to concentrate in a few key locations.  With so much water and food, finding rainbow trout, especially trophy trout in the murky, flooded Kenai became a challenge.  We quickly caught on to the new spots, selected the right pattern, and began hooking big Kenai River Rainbows.

September is the time of year to hunt Trophy Rainbow Trout on the Kenai River.  By this time several species of Salmon have, or are spawning, causing a large increase of food for Rainbow Trout.  With winter fast approaching, Kenai Rainbow Trout sense the shortening days and decrease of water level causing them to eat constantly, fattening up for the long cold months ahead.

King Salmon fishing on the Kenai Peninsula in 2008 was a productive season.  This feisty, chrome Kasilof Native King Salmon weighed in at 42 lbs and put up an amazing fight.  Kings like the one Andrea is holding was a common catch in the 2008 2nd run king salmon season.  Fish this size were hooked daily in July.  The Kasilof River produced more bites than the Kenai River for the 3rd year in a row.  Fishing the Kenai River allows you to have the chance at catching a world record King Salmon, but when looking at the bottom line the Kasilof River provides more opportunity to catch a Alaskan King Salmon on a consistant basis.  When on a guided fishing trip on the Kasilof River your chance of having multilpe hook ups in a day is pretty good thru most of June and July.  Another fact that is not often known is that the Kasilof River has the 2nd largest strain of native king salmon in the world.  About 5 years ago fish and game found a 112 lb carcass on the bank of the Kasilof River.  There are monstor kings that come into this fishery to spawn every year!

The Kasilof River offers big king salmon, a peaceful float down a drift only river, and more consistant opportunity for bites than anywhere on the Kenai Peninsula..  This is truly a fishing trip of a lifetime and hooking into King Salmon like the one shown above is a memory that will last a lifetime.  And it is only 3 hours from Anchorage!  If you have the time on your next Alaska Vacation give us a call and we can show you our stomping grounds for King Salmon on the Kasilof River in South Central Alaska.

After almost a month since our last Alaska fishing news update we have lots of new stories to tell in upcoming Trophy Rainbow Trout Stories!  The month of September treated the boys at Drift Away Fishing very well!  Hooking fish in the 30 inch class was a daily event....  Landing them was was another feat.  Here is one Pic showing what went on during the last months' hunt for the Alaska Trophy Rainbow Tout:

This double was 58 inches of Kenai River Rainbow trout.  I rainbow was caught in each of Nigel and Nick's boat side by side in the 2nd pass in the hole.  What a way to start the day off on the majestic Kenai!

Nick, Nigel, and I were fortunate to trout fish with many anglers that worked hard all day to capture their dream Kenai River Rainbow Trout.  One group in particular devised a new tool for releasing rainbows called the "Hook Off."  They showed us how to use their creation and we were hooked.  Here is a little bit on the Hook Off and how it is used:

HookOff is a new fish hook removal system specifically developed by environmentally sensitive anglers who practice “catch and release” fishing. The focus has been to make it the easiest, quickest and most effective and sensitive technique of releasing.

Put simply, our mission is to save fish. Quickly releasing fish, with the least amount of handling, is one of the most direct ways we all can contribute to this focus. HookOff achieves this by allowing you to release your catch without handling the fish or removing it from the water!

We wanted to design a releasing tool that was simple in design, easy to use and, if possible, release the fish without touching it or removing it from the water. Some of us were a bit clumsy, and for that reason it had to be easily available on our vest… and float…just in case in the act of celebration we dropped it into the water. Lastly, since we tend to tie our own flies, being sure the fly was not damaged was imperative. Admittedly it took a few more bottles of wine but finally the answer emerged…HookOff.

During the month of September it is a great time to be up in Alaska Trout fishing the waters of the Kenai River.  With trophy trout lurking the waters of the Kenai Peninsula, clients get to experience the best of the best with the quiet and serenity that Alaska has to offer.  Since most of the summer tourist are back south, it is the trout fishermen / fisher women that get to enjoy how most of us locals get to experience the fall.  Quiet rivers, peaceful nights, and fall colors that will rival even the midwest!  Here is another taste of the Kenai River Rainbow we fish our hearts out for daily:

This colored up Kenai rainbow was caught in the first drift of the day as Chuck and Don doubled up on 2 big rainbows.  Chuck was the lucky one to bring his in as Don cheered him on.  After this sweet trout we nicknamed "Beatty", we all met up with our buddy Jake to have some blueberry scones and coffee to celebrate the moment.

The Middle Kenai river is the destination for trophy Rainbow trout.  Steve, Tucker, and Nick were returning clients from Texas, so it did not take them long to get dialed back into fly fishing. We were fortune enough to hook up with two trophy trout in the beginning; We broke off the first one and were able to land the second one after an epic battle, which is pictured below:

As the trip went on we were able to land a hand full of trout in the mid to high twenty inch range.  These Kenai Rainbows are truly amazing as they will strip out your fly line before you blink your eyes.  This nice rainbow below was landed after stripping Nick out 50 plus feet twice.

What a day on the Middle Kenai River as Todd, Jay and Jeremy went out for a day trout fishing on the Kenai Peninsula's most sacred trout waters.  It was Todd and Jay's first day trout fishing the Kenai River so learning the Kenai techniques to catching rainbow trout was first priority.  Before long the boys were dialed in and hooking into most of their opportunities.  The better drift you present along with good hook sets allows you to get into what the Kenai really has to offer. 

As the day went on, Todd and Jay started providing the drift they needed to hook into bigger fish such as this 24 x 15 Kenai River Rainbow Trout.  Truly an awesome fish as its girth says it all:

Once your drift is down and your presentation is that of natural eggs floating down river, you have the chance at bigger rainbows.  Then this happened...

Jay was a luck man this day, tying into this magnum female Kenai River Rainbow which cleared the water over 5 times and took Jay to the backing.  She was a whopping 30 1/2 inches long x 17 inch girth.  With the fish calculations put into the equation she weighs over 12 pounds.  Due to where we caught her, we were not able to pull over to the bank without stressing the fish so we snapped a quick photo to provide evidence.

With the right drift at the right time in the right place the pieces came together and we put this Kenai whopper into the net.  Kenai Rainbows like the picture above are hooked daily, but....   Jay is one of our fortunate customers to put the big one in the net.  Maybe you're next???  The rest of the season the fish are only going to get bigger so strap on your safety belts and get ready for the battle of a lifetime.

The Kings are defiantly here!  As the days of King Salmon season wind down, the action is still on the rise.  This past Monday Jeremy and I had a fun group of guys from the mid-west along with an Alaskan local hunting down some second run Kings on the Kasilof.  We left the Kasilof boat launch eager to tie into some of the many fish that were making their way up the Kasilof river to spawn.  

It wasn't long into the second drift of the day when rods started bending, and kept bending consistently as we made our way down river.  The day ended in style, my boat had found four fish in the upper part of the river,  while Jeremy worked down low hunting tidal fish.  Jeremy posted up a few hundred yards above the takeout waiting for one more King.  As my boat drifted towards his I saw one of his clients hook into a fish, but as it often goes with Kings, the fish came off.  No worries I thought,  with plenty of fish moving into the river it would only be a matter of time.  Sure enough,  by the time I reached the takeout I looked up and heard a frantic guide yelling, "Reel, Reel, Reel".  Yep,  Jeremy was sideways in the drift preparing to  land his last fish of the day.  Everyone in my group cheered from shore as the King was netted just above the takeout.  What a way to finish the day.  Who had caught the last fish?   The only girl in the group, and as always, it was bigger than the guys fish.  What a great day everyone!  Here is a photo of seven happy folks holding seven beautiful Kasilof Kings.

As the half way mark of July draws near,  the rivers are slowly rising as well as the fishing action.  The past few days we have been able to hook some beautiful second run Kings and had great success Trout fishing on the Kenai. 

Typically the Rainbow Trout bite slows in July, however we are still finding some nice size fish as well as good numbers.  Fly fishing with flesh and egg patterns has been the ticket to larger Trout, while spin fishing has been producing numbers. 

Earlier this month we all took a day off from guiding to have a "team building exercise"  we decided the best place to exercise was in Nigel's power boat Trout fishing on the Kenai.  What a great idea!  Jeremy's Dad, John, came along to help us work together as a team.  To our excitement the Trout fishing was excellent, Rainbows of chunky proportions were being brought to the boat on fly gear as well as center pinning.

Trout season is underway as the Kenai River Rainbow Trout are looking healthier than ever!  After a good winter of the trout having a good supply of food, many still have the fat football like appearance to their figure.  We have been trout fishing on the Kenai River the last few weeks since the opener in Mid June as egg and flesh imitations are still the primary source of food for Kenai Rainbows.  With this season's salmon entering the river and the trout looking as healthy as they do from a good winter, fall Rainbow Trout Fishing on the Kenai River is shaping up to be a good one.  Mid August thru mid October is prime time to get in on the Kenai River Trophy Rainbow Trout action!!  Here is a piggy from last season that was caught in late September by Nick with friend Steve:

After nearly 3 weeks of Nick, Nigel, and I working on a daily basis hunting down Kenai and Kasilof River King Salmon, the first run is still coming in strong.  Spending most of our time on the Kasilof till now, it is time to switch gears a little bit. 

Nigel has been fishing the Kenai River for Kings over the past 3 weeks and loving every minute of it.  Bait opened up recently, the water clarity has been about average and things are heating up for the month of July when the second run should come in strong.

Since late May, the Kasilof River King Salmon Fishery has been pretty amazing.  The river has been gifted with a very strong first run of Kings and we have been fortunate enough to see it evolve throughout the past 6 weeks.  Fishing the river on a daily basis allows us to put our fingers on where the fish are and when they will be there.  After many happy clients and lots of time curing eggs, we are looking forward to a solid second run of King Salmon on the Kasilof River.

After a great day of fishing on the Kasilof River Jeremy, Nigel, and Nick headed for Homer to fish Halibut with Silver Fox Charters. Even though we were on little sleep from the previous days our stoke level was high knowing that today was going to be extra special.

The crew at Silver Fox was gearing up for the legendary fishing grounds of the Barren Islands and the Kennedy Entrance.    Aboard the 56’ Ultimate there was much excitement; perfect weather, clear skies and calm seas, everyone was eager to leave Kachamach Bay and begin the 70-mile voyage to the Kennedy Entrance.

The miles went by fast, the scenery along the coastline was amazing, while the conversation with the crew and guests about today’s trip and other fishing stories from around the globe past the time until we reached our destination.   Soon Captain Jerry and his son Eric had the boat in position and rods in our hands.  It wasn’t long before everyone was hooked up and battling a Halibut.  The fish averaged between 15-40 lbs, in short time the boat had its limit and our arms were tired.

After our adventure on the salt we were invited to their new lodge called Lodge At Homer.  This is one of the most impressive lodges on the Kenai Peninsula.  Settled on 84 acres in the hills above Homer, this 12,000 sq ft. lodge is a five star destination and comes with our highest recommendations  

On the way back we commented on great the fishing, professionalism of the crew, and top of the line fishing gear.   Driving home with a trunk full of halibut and fond memories form a great day leaves us anticipating the next trip with Silver Fox.

The Kasilof River 1st Run King Salmon season is under way.  Our annual fishing get together brought old and new friends to our favorite pastime, Coho Cove Campground.  From May 16th-20th lines were in the water and Fresh King Salmon was cooked over coals from our daily camp fires. 

Opening day Nick, Jeremy, John, and a good friend Scot headed out to meet at the Kasilof River Boat Launch to shove off on our maiden voyage of the year.  Nigel, on his first guided trip of the year, had the pleasure of fishing with three amigos from Mexico.  Excitement in the air, chills running thru our bodies, we felt nothing short of ecstatic. 

Kasilof River King Salmon Fishing can be spotty on opening day while at the same time can produce more takedowns than anywhere in the Kenai Peninsula.  We understand this, inform all our guests, and go out leaving nothing behind.  Temperature, water level, barometric pressure, and fishing pressure are all determining factors in the days end result.  With the water up from last year's spring, warm weather, and starting after the initial rush of boats, we put the anchor down in Eagle's Nest around 11:30 am. 

We expected to have some action, but were blown away when we had our first king into the net 20 minutes into the drift.  Back bouncing eggs with a small spin n' glow was the winning ticket for Scot as we landed a 15lb. Native Kasilof King Salmon.  The fight from Scot's King was what we have all been waiting for all winter and it happened in the first hole during our first drift.  Catching a King Salmon is a special moment for any angler that can appreciate the time and dedication it takes to get a chance at Alaska's number one sought after species of Salmon.  Limit is one per day, five per season. 

The rest of the day we did not see much more action from the King Salmon, but were mildly entertained by the Dolly Varden takedowns that kept us on our toes.  As we rowed to our campsite along the river, the sweet conversation of preparing dinner came to a head.  We wrapped the King in some aluminum foil and placed it in the coals from our fire pit.  Shortly there after we were immersed in some of the healthiest, tastiest food a man or woman could ever put into their body. 

We actually have clients that come up to catch salmon so they do not have to buy farm raised salmon from the store.  The Omega 3 fatty acids contained in salmon is some of the best on earth!

Long story short we fished for 3 days relaxing with our friends, family, and the Kenai Peninsula's In dependant Living Center.  Smiles only grew as we floated with different friends throughout the weekend.  A handful of nice Kasilof King Salmon were landed, more were hooked, and it is only going to get better as the season progresses.

The peak of the 1st run Kasilof Kings runs from May 28th- June 15th on average with a few great days on either side depending on the year.  1st run Kings in the Kasilof average 12- 25 lbs, with the occasional 30 lb fish.  July is when the big boys and girls come into the river to spawn.  2nd run Kasilof Kings can reach 60 plus pounds!  This year is shaping up to be a great 1st run, with predictions from many of the guides that the run is going to start getting hot around the 23rd or 24th.  We are running King Salmon trips on the Kasilof River on a daily basis until July 31st with Silver Salmon following the King season.
